Matching pursuits with time-frequency dictionaries

چکیده
We introduce an algorithm, called matching pursuit, that decomposes any signal into a linear expansion of waveforms that are selected from a redundant dictionary of functions. These waveforms are chosen in order to best match the signal structures. Matching pursuits are general procedures to compute adaptive signal representations. With a dictionary of Gabor functions a matching pursuit defines an adaptive time-frequency transform. We derive a signal energy distribution in the time-frequency plane, which does not include interference terms, unlike Wigner and Cohen class distributions. A matching pursuit isolates the signal structures that are coherent with respect to a given dictionary. An application to pattern extraction from noisy signals is described. We compare a matching pursuit decomposition with a signal expansion over an optimized wavepacket orthonormal basis, selected with the algorithm of Coifman and Wickerhauser.

Adaptive Time-frequency Approximations with Matching Pursuits
Computing the optimal expansion of a signal in a redundant dictionary of waveforms is an NP-complete problem. We introduce a greedy algorithm called a matching pursuit which computes a sub-optimal expansion. The dictionary waveforms which best match a signal's structures are chosen iteratively. An orthogonalized version of the matching pursuit is also developed. Matching pursuits are general pr...

متن کاملDictionaries for matching pursuits video coding
Matching pursuits is a dictionary-based coding method, which has recently been demonstrated to outperform standard techniques, such as H.263, at low bit rate video compression. Unfortunately, the method involves an extremely high computational cost, compared to the DCT-based H.263. The contribution of this paper relies on reporting three new dictionaries for matching pursuits video coding, whos...
متن کاملMatching Pursuits with Random Sequential Subdictionaries
Matching pursuits are a class of greedy algorithms commonly used in signal processing, for solving the sparse approximation problem. They rely on an atom selection step that requires the calculation of numerous projections, which can be computationally costly for large dictionaries and burdens their competitiveness in coding applications. We propose using a non adaptive random sequence of subdi...
